UFC Fight Night 99 results: Brett Johns scores shutout decision win over Kwan Ho Kwak

BELFAST, Northern Ireland – Brett Johns dominated Kwan Ho Kawk with a mixture of takedowns and damaging strikes on the feet, leading to a one-sided effort that made life easy on the judges.

Although Johns (13-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) battered Kwak (9-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) to the point of a near-finish in the second round, he ultimately settled for a unanimous-decision victory with scores of 30-27 across the board.

The bantamweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 99 event at SSE Arena Belfast in Belfast, Northern Ireland. The entire event streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Johns opened this fight looking like a man interested only in takedowns. Over and over again, he pressed Kwak into the fence and labored to put his man on the mat, only to have Kwak pop right back up again.

That first round set up a different attack for Johns in the second, which he began by faking the takedown and coming up high with an uppercut that stunned Kwak. That provided an opportunity for Johns to go on the attack with his striking game, rocking Kwak with right hands and sending him reeling with a jumping knee to the chin.

Kwak took the punishment gamely, however, and even managed some offense of his own. But in the third, Johns returned to the takedown and spent most of the last frame mauling Kwak on the mat before surviving a late stand-up surge in the final minute.

The result was a clear victory for Johns, who swept Kwak on all three judges’ scorecards.

With the win in his UFC debut – the first by a Welsh fighter – Johns remains undefeated as a professional. Kwak’s loss is the first of his pro career.
