At Saturday’s UFC 172 event, Brazilian slugger Glover Teixeira gets his chance to unseat long-reigning UFC light-heavyweight kingpin Jon Jones. But is he the right man for the job?
According to the latest USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light-heavyweight rankings, Phil Davis is actually the highest-ranked contender yet to have his shot at “Bones,” checking in at No. 2. But Davis, despite his August win over former UFC light heavyweight champ Lyoto Machida, was never really considered for the fight. Instead, that honor went to Teixeria, who currently sits at No. 4.
Davis will also be in action at UFC 172, facing hard-hitting Anthony Johnson, who is an honorable mention on the list. When Saturday night’s event is in the books, the light heavyweight picture could look considerably different. Will Jones remain on top?
