Chad Mendes will get his long-awaited rematch with Jose Aldo this summer -- and this time the challenger will be much closer to home.

The Los Angeles Times on Sunday reported that Mendes will square off with Aldo in the UFC 176 headliner at Staples Center in California’s largest city on Aug. 2. News of the event and venue were subsequently confirmed by the Las Vegas-based promotion. The Octagon last touched down in L.A. for UFC on Fox 4 in August 2012, when Mauricio Rua stopped Brandon Vera via fourth-round TKO in the evening’s main event.

Aldo and Mendes first met at UFC 142 in Rio de Janeiro, with the featherweight champion retaining his belt with a devastating first-round knockout. The Nova Uniao standout has won 17 straight fights overall, including six in the UFC. Aldo has captured triumphs over Frankie Edgar, Chan Sung Jung and Ricardo Lamas since his win over Mendes.

Anchored at Team Alpha Male in Sacramento, Calif., Mendes is 5-0 -- with four victories via knockout -- since suffering his first career defeat against Aldo. The featherweight known as “Money” has garnered notable wins over Darren Elkins, Clay Guida and Nik Lentz during his current streak.
