BANGOR, Maine – Thiago Tavares broke a string of decisions to open UFC Fight Night 47’s card with a first-round finish.
Tavares swarmed Robbie Peralta on the mat, refusing to let him escape and seizing an opportunity to sink a rear-naked choke.
The featherweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 47 at Cross Insurance Center in Bangor, Maine. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following prelims on FOX Sports 2.
Fighting for the first time at featherweight after a long career as a lightweight, Tavares elicited a tap at the 4:27 mark of the opening frame after Peralta tapped to the submission hold.
Peralta put up a good fight for the Brazilian, working constantly to escape the bottom position after Tavares deposited him to the mat early and advanced to back control before taking mount. Tavares simply outclassed him on the mat, alternating between postured punches and elbows and threats of an arm-triangle choke.
A last-ditch effort from Peralta to escape brought him to his knees. Swatting away Tavares’ rabbit punches, he exposed his neck and set the end in motion.
Tavares (19-5-1 MMA, 8-6-1 UFC) now has won two straight in the UFC and makes a big statement in his first fight at 145 pounds. Peralta (18-5 MMA, 4-2 UFC), meanwhile, sees a two-fight win streak snapped.
