Jay Z and Anderson Silva Lauch Static: Watch Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen, the Premiere

Anderson Silva vs. Chael Sonnen at UFC 117Media mogul Jay Z and legendary fighter Anderson Silva have come together to produce a new series for Jay Z’s Life+Times web channel. The series, entitled STATIC, delves deeper into some of the most hotly contested rivalries in mixed martial arts, giving fans a much more thorough understanding of the friction between the fighters.

The series premiere features the rivalry between Anderson Silva and Chael Sonnen, going behind the scenes of one of the greatest rivalries that the sport has ever scene, and arguably the rivalry that launched the WWE-esque Chael Sonnen persona that we know today.

The officials synopsis for the first episode:

In 2010 the biggest name and the undisputed best fighter in the UFC was Brazilian Anderson “The Spider” Silva. While Silva was the best at the time, relatively unknown Chael Sonnen felt differently and began saying so publicly and eventually getting a fight with Silva. From the minute the fight was announced, Sonnen began trash talking Silva every chance he got, from insulting his manager, his wife, and ethnicity among other things. While Sonnen seemed to revel in the talking, Silva was not a fan of it and at while at times he seemed to brush it off, he vowed to handle it in the ring. On August 7, 2010 they met for the first time in the octagon and while Sonnen essentially dominated the first 4 and half rounds, Silva would submit Sonnen with a triangle choke and retain his title as best in the world. Leading up to their second fight Sonnen continued his trash talk and was more confident based on how close he was in the first fight, however this fight would end with Silva winning with a 2nd round TKO to end all discussion of who the better fighter was. At the end of the 2nd fight, Silva called Sonnen into the ring with him and celebrated his opponent ending any problems the two may have had with each other. Featuring original interviews with Anderson Silva, Chael Sonnen, Ed Soares, Giorge Martin, Jason Miller, Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, Dan Henderson and Michael Bisping.

The series isn’t a self-serving vehicle for Silva, however. The series truly does shine the spotlight on some of the hottest rivalries in MMA. Aside from Silva vs. Sonnen, STATIC will also shine the spotlight on Nick Diaz vs. Jason Miller, Ronda Rousey vs. Miesha Tate, and Dominick Cruz vs. Urijah Faber.

Stay tuned to MMAWeekly.com for future episodes of STATIC as they are released.

Nick Diaz v. Jason Miller
On April 17th 2010, after Jake Shields had defeated Dan Henderson and was doing his post-fight interview, former opponent Jason Miller decided it would be a good time to ask for a rematch and entered the cage uninvited and interrupted the interview. After the interruption Jake Shields camp, Nick Diaz included, jumped Jason Miller, and from there, a rivalry between Diaz and Miller began. While the two never would fight in the ring, they had plenty of altercations outside of the ring and still dislike each other. Featuring original interviews with Jason Miller, Nick Diaz, Dan Henderson, Michael Bisping, Dominick Cruz, and Chael Sonnen.

Ronda Rousey v. Miesha Tate
While the women’s MMA division may be small, when former Olympian Ronda Rousey became a professional fighter she shot to fame and rubbed some of her fellow athletes the wrong way. One of those athletes was current champion Miesha Tate. As the two threw barbs at each other through the media, they eventually fought for Tate’s title and Rousey won in the first round. Tensions between the two grew and though they eventually fought again, the animosity still persists. Featuring original interviews with Miesha Tate, Bryan Caraway, Malki Kawa, Nick Diaz, and Anderson Silva.page1image24000page1image24160page1image24640

Dominick Cruz v. Urijah Faber
Before Dominick Cruz was a UFC champion, he had a WEC title shot in is his WEC debut against champion Urijah Faber on March 24, 2007. Angered his name wasn’t on the promotional poster, Cruz figured the best way to get his name on the poster was to sign it over Faber’s face. While Cruz insisted it wasn’t Faber he had the problem with, Faber still took offense and there has been tension between the two ever since. Faber would go on to win WEC 26 by a guillotine choke in the first round, however Cruz would avenge that loss July 2,2011 as he defended his title against Faber in a 5 round unanimous decision victory. Since the poster incident the two have publicly trades barbs, and even after two ferocious fights the animosity still builds with Faber remaining as Cruz’s only loss. Featuring original interviews with Dominick Cruz, Urijah Faber, Eric Del Fierro, Tommy Schurkamp, and Chael Sonnen.
