Why Robbie Lawler vs. Carlos Condit 2 Shouldn’t Happen Next

At UFC 195, Robbie Lawler and Carlos Condit put on a fight for the ages in which bombs were tossed and blood was shed. To the chagrin of many, Lawler walked out of the MGM Grand Garden Arena with the split decision victory.

As soon as the fight ended. fans and media alike were calling for an immediate rematch. The fight was a classic and Condit and Lawler were down for a rematch. Dana White scored the fight for Condit but didn’t commit to a second showdown between the two. Nor should he have. Why you might ask?

Because it shouldn’t happen next.

An immediate title rematch should only be warranted in these cases:

A) When the challenger wins the type of fight like the UFC 195 main event.

B) A draw.

C) a fighter who has had a long title reign loses the strap. Examples of that would be Ronda Rousey getting another shot at Holly Holm and Jose Aldo facing Conor McGregor.

No offense to Condit. He fought the fight of his life. He was the best Carlos Condit we have ever seen inside the Octagon and a judge scored the bout in his favor. But two judges felt he didn’t win the third round and that was the determining round of the fight.

It’s for these reasons people feel we should see this fight one more time. Who wouldn’t want to see Lawler and Condit go toe-to-toe for another 25 minutes?

The easy thing to do anytime we see a close fight is to say, “What a great fight! Let’s see a rematch!”

That is the problem in MMA. We always want the rematch. All rematches do is clog the line for fighters who are in line, waiting for their opportunity to become a UFC champion.

In October, Tyron Woodley was promised a shot at the winner of last Saturday’s showdown. You also have Johny Hendricks, who was supposed to face Woodley at UFC 192 but had to bow out of the fight due to a weight cutting issue. Hendricks had the 2014 Fight of the Year with Lawler at UFC 171 and will face Stephen Thompson at UFC 196 next month. And then there’s Rory MacDonald, who had the 2015 FOTY against Lawler, and Demian Maia who dominated Gunnar Nelson at UFC 194. Then there’s always former long-reigning welterweight champ Georges St-Pierre who could be returning this year.

When the Lawler-Condit fight was made last year, people groaned since Condit was only 2-2 in last four fights and lost to Woodley in 2014. Four days post-UFC 195, everyone wants to see it happen again.

Let Condit get back on the horse, get two wins and allow other fighters have a shot at the belt. If Condit can get those victories and Lawler retains the strap, let’s then see the rematch.

If it’s meant to be, Lawler and Condit will dance again.
