Things weren’t looking great for Tony Ferguson in the opening round of his December 2015 clash with a dangerous Edson Barboza. But “El Cucuy” proved you can never count him out.
Bloodied and battered in the action-packed contest at The Ultimate Fighter 22 Finale, Ferguson seized his opportunity in a second-round scramble and locked in his patented D’Arice choke, forcing Barboza to submit in a fight he had controlled in the early going.
The pair earned “Fight of the Night” honors for the gripping contest.
At next month’s UFC Fight Night 98, Ferguson (21-3 MMA, 11-1 UFC) takes on former UFC lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos (25-8 MMA, 14-6 UFC) in the night’s main event. The card takes place Nov. 5 at Mexico City Arena in Mexico City. The night’s official bout order has yet to be revealed, but the evening’s main card airs on FS1 following prelims on UFC Fight Pass.
It’s a key fight at 155 pounds, with dos Anjos set as the No. 3 fighter in the latest USA TODAY Sports MMA lightweight rankings, and Ferguson just behind at No. 4.
Ahead of that clash, watch Ferguson’s thrilling win over fellow top-ranked lightweight Barboza.
