UFC Fight Night 48 results: Colby Covington pounds out Wang Anying

MACAU – Colby Covington was given three rounds to show his skills in his UFC debut, but he only needed one.

Against Wang Anying, Covington (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) transitioned seamlessly from takedowns to ground-and-pound, brutalizing Anying (2-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) on the mat until he tapped to strikes just as referee Leon Roberts seemed ready to halt the bout, bringing an end at the 4:50 mark of Round 1.

The welterweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC Fight Night 48 event at The Venetian Macao’s CotaiArena in Macau. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

Covington didn’t need long to get this fight on the floor. He took down Anying almost immediately, and he then quickly tied up one of Anying’s arms so he could batter the nearly defenseless fighter with a series of damaging left hands.

Anying managed to escape that assault and work back to his feet, but he couldn’t stay there long. With Covington soon swarming all over him against the fence, one particularly hard right hand had Anying covering up and waiting for the finish. When it didn’t come fast enough, he went ahead and tapped out to end all doubt, just as long as it got him out from under the storm of punches being rained down by Covington.

With the win, Covington remains undefeated as a professional. Anying loses for the first time in his short career.
