UFC 161 results/photos: James Krause upsets vet Sam Stout in UFC debut

WINNIPEG – After three rounds vying with James Krause’s sizable reach advantage, Sam Stout nabbed a takedown, likely hoping to curry favor with judges.

Instead, he found himself trapped in a guillotine choke that allowed short-notice replacement Krause to secure his first-ever octagon win.

The lightweight bout was part of today’s UFC 161 event at MTS Centre in Winnipeg. It aired on FX after additional prelims on Facebook and ahead of a pay-per-view main card.

London, Ontario, native Stout cursed himself as the two separated and the final bell rang. With several Canadians coming out ahead on scorecards, he might have taken home a close win.

Krause peppered him throughout the fight with a stiff jab and brought out a variety of well-timed kicks that found their target. Late in the first, a sneaky high kick slammed into Stout’s head and splattered the two of them in blood as they worked on the mat.

Stout found his way inside in the second round with a stiff body shot that hurt Krause. But he was unable to follow up to change the fight’s course.

The two largely engaged in a hard sparring match before the improbable submission late in the final round, which came with just 13 seconds remaining in the fight.

According to FightMetric, among three-round bouts, only one other UFC fight in history ended later (Cole Miller submitted Jorge Gurgel with 12 seconds remaining at UFC 86).

“I hurt him badly in the first round with those kicks and knees but, with two weeks’ notice for the fight and with him being so hard to finish, I knew I couldn’t afford to go crazy to try to finish him,” Krause said. “I wanted to finish him, but I couldn’t chase him all around the octagon hoping to land a bomb. I had to apply smart pressure. He hasn’t been stopped since 2006, and this is a big win for me.”

Krause (20-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC), who replaced an injured Isaac Vallie-Flagg, now has won eight straight fights. Stout (21-8-1 MMA, 8-8 UFC), a frequent UFC bonus-winner, has now alternated between wins and losses for six fights.
