Patrick Cummins will face a notable name at the UFC’s May event in Brazil.
Cummins (8-3 MMA, 4-3 UFC) is slated to fight veteran light heavyweight Antonio Rogerio Nogueira (21-7 MMA, 4-4 UFC), officials today announced.
The event, currently expected to be UFC Fight Night 88 (but possibly soon to be renamed UFC 198), takes place May 14 at a Brazilian city to be announced. The event is currently slated to air on FOX Sports 1.
Cummins is an honorable mention in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA light-heavyweight rankings. Nogueira recently fell out of the top 15.
Cummins, 35, was on a 4-1 run that included victories over Rafael Cavalcante and Antoio Carlos Junior before a recent TKO loss to Glover Teixeira at UFC Fight Night 77 in November. The former NCAA Division I All-American wrestler has suffered knockouts in all three of his career losses, which also came to Ovince Saint Preux and current champ Daniel Cormier under the UFC banner.
He now meets Nogueira, a former PRIDE star who’s struggled with setbacks and injuries since joining the UFC in 2009. The 39-year-old Brazilian fan favorite suffered losses to Anthony Johnson and Mauricio “Shogun” Rua in his two most recent bouts, and he’s 2-4 over the past five-plus years.
