Alexander Gustafsson's preferred fight – Daniel Cormier title bout, or Jon Jones rematch?

STOCKHOLM – Two-time UFC light-heavyweight title challenger Alexander Gustafsson isn’t going anywhere, but he has a good idea about whom he’d fight if forced to hang up his gloves.

If faced with the option of fighting new champ Daniel Cormier or rematching Jon Jones, he told MMAjunkie, “I’d probably fight Jon Jones again.”

“That’s the fight everybody wants to see,” he added. “That’s the fight I want to have again. I would do it for myself, but I would mainly do it for my fans.”

Gustafsson (16-3 MMA, 8-3 UFC) takes on Cormier (16-1 MMA, 5-1 UFC) next week at UFC 192, which takes place Oct. 3 at Houston’s Toyota Center. It’s Gustafson’s second pay-per-view headliner and offers a chance to redeem himself following a first-round knockout loss to Anthony Johnson in January.

Gustafsson could win a title that’s eluded him for several years. But that’s not the only thing that he’s been unable to grasp; a rematch with Jones is still hanging over his head.

The two won “Fight of the Year” honors for their meeting at UFC 165 in 2013, which Jones took via unanimous decision. An immediate rematch was scheduled, but Jones instead elected to fight Glover Teixeira. Gustafsson stayed in title contention and earned a rematch, but an injury sidelined him.

Then tragedy struck when Jones was allegedly involved in a hit-and-run accident and stripped of his title, allowing his rival and former opponent Cormier to seize the vacant belt in a bout against Johnson.

Like several fighters in the light-heavyweight division, Gustafsson is waiting to see what happens with Jones. But he might have more invested in the outcome than anyone else.
