Alexander Gustafsson Topples Georges St-Pierre in EA Sports UFC Video Game Cover Vote

Jon Jones & Alexander Gustafsson UFC Game VoteThe first edition of the EA Sports UFC video game is set to be unleashed on the gaming fight fans in spring of 2014.

UFC light heavyweight champion Jon Jones was announced several weeks ago as the first UFC athlete to grace the cover.

“It’s a huge honor,” said Jones. “I’m just really excited for the opportunity.”

Being the first cover under the banner of EA Sports, the gaming company and the UFC launched a fan campaign to designate another fighter to join Jones on the cover. Starting out with 16 fighters in a tournament format with winners determined by fan voting.

After weeks of voting, the final came down to Georges St-Pierre, who vacated his UFC welterweight championship on Friday, and top light heavyweight contender Alexander Gustafsson.

In a bit of a surprise, fans voted Gustafsson over St-Pierre to be featured opposite Jones for the first EA Sports UFC video game cover.

Jones and Gustafsson fought over Jones’ belt at UFC 165 in September. It was a brutal five-round battle that left fans awed. Jones went through the toughest fight of his career, but emerged victorious in the end.

If both win their upcoming bouts in early 2014, they will rematch, a fact not lost on Jones when he discovered Gustafsson won the vote.

“I’m really excited. This is gonna be really huge for our rematch,” said the light heavyweight champ. “I’m gonna run and cry now.”

Gustafsson wasn’t present at the announcement, but taped a message for fans.

“Hey guys, I’m sorry I couldn’t be there today. It’s an honor and it’s really great to be on the first cover of the EA Sports UFC game.”
