Zuffa, Ubisoft Settle Infringement Suit

The Ultimate Fighting Championship’s parent company and video game producer Ubisoft today jointly announced the dissolution of a lawsuit filed by Zuffa in December.

Zuffa claimed trademark infringement over the term “Ultimate Fighting,” which appeared on the packaging of the Ubisoft-produced video game “Fighters Uncaged.” The packaging also encouraged players to become “the Ultimate Fighting weapon!”

As owners of the trademark, Zuffa alleged in its claim that Ubisoft's use of the term confused consumers and created a connection between the UFC and the underground fighting depicted in the game, tarnishing Zuffa's reputation and hurting it as a business.

To resolve the dispute, Ubisoft has ceased selling copies of “Fighters Uncaged” that feature the words on the back cover and has changed the game's packaging so that the trademarked phrase no longer appears.
