Video: Watch the moment that nearly derailed UFC champ Jon Jones' title run

Before Jon Jones tore through Chael Sonnen, before he went to war with Alexander Gustafsson, he had a near-miss with Vitor Belfort.

Jones (19-1 MMA, 13-1 UFC) had what is being called his stiffest test yet in September when he got past Gustafsson with a unanimous decision at UFC 165 in Toronto. Although Jones won on all three scorecards, the round-by-round scores for two frames varied, as did the rounds that fans and analysts thought each fighter won.

Ultimately, of course, Jones defended his UFC light heavyweight title once again, and he’ll next fight Glover Teixeira sometime in 2014 before a possible rematch with Gustafsson.

But a little more than a year ago at UFC 152, also in Toronto, everything nearly went sideways for Jones in a hurry against Belfort.

The champ took the Brazilian down early in the first round and looked to ground-and-pound him. But Belfort caught Jones in an armbar – and it was close. Jones ultimately was able to power his way out of the hold, and he went on to submit Belfort in the fourth round.

But in the MMA game of inches, another couple in Belfort’s favor, and who knows?
