Video: Sage Northcutt contemplates his future after dream result at UFC 192

Heavily hyped 19-year-old Sage Northcutt made his UFC debut on Saturday at UFC 192, and it couldn’t have gone much better.

Northcutt (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC), the youngest fighter on the UFC roster, stopped Francisco Trevino (12-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in just 57 seconds after a flurry of strikes, a big takedown and some ground-and-pound led to a TKO stoppage.

He said the execution in the quick lightweight contest, which streamed on UFC Fight Pass, was exactly what he’d hoped for.

“It’s everything I’ve dreamt of, everything that I’ve imagined and everything that I thought of; I visualized it just like it happened,” Northcutt told MMAjunkie at the UFC 192 post-fight press conference at Houston’s Toyota Center. “The first kick or so that I threw, it wasn’t to actually hit him. It was just to set up him, see what he was going to do and throw a feint. And then from there, I hit him and dropped him then started throwing elbows and took him back down and finished the fight.”

Northcutt made UFC history at the event and became the youngest fighter to score a UFC victory. His runaway performance against Trevino certainly left a strong impression on the MMA community, but he’ll likely be groomed slowly.

The 155-pound division is arguably the deepest in the sport, and Northcutt has a lot to prove before he’s booked for fights that could lead to a ranking next to his name. Northcutt said he knows as much, which is why he takes a very fundamental approach to training.

“Right now I’m still young,” he said. “I’m 19 years old, and I have a lot of technique to work on right. I’m working on positional, situational, drilling, technique and not really training specifically for a fight camp for any specific fighter.

“So if Dana White or Mr. (Joe) Silva goes, ‘Hey Sage, you’re going to fight this guy in two weeks from now,’ I’m not going to have a fight camp for that guy yet that I’m going to go fight. It’s just training my technique my to get myself better for now because I still have so much to learn.”
