Video: Ryan Ford says he fought WSOF 14 headliner with freshly broken arm

Ryan Ford couldn’t capitalize on an early knockdown and instead suffered a submission loss to Jake Shields, but the Canadian welterweight appears to have entered this weekend’s bout with an injury.

Ford, who suffered a first-round submission loss in the NBC Sports Network-televised WSOF 14 headliner on Saturday, today posted a video in which he said he fought with a broken arm.

Ford (22-5), who briefly dropped Shields (30-7-1) before losing via rear-naked choke (watch the Shields vs. Ford video highlights), said he suffered a broken ulnar on Sept. 30.

“Today is Oct. 2, Thursday,” said Ford, in an apparently 10-day-old video. “Part of this game is putting your body through hard work. And unfortunately, two days ago, on Tuesday, at the end of sparring, I broke my arm. I found that out yesterday after seeing the doctor for my X-ray results.”

Ford said the break happened right above a plate that was installed for a previous break. However, needing his fight purse to support his family, he said he went through with the bout.

“You know, I don’t have a choice but to fight,” he said. “You know, it’s funny. I have the toughest challenge ahead of me on Oct. 11 against Jake Shields. And now I get thrown with another challenge: fighting him with a broken arm.”
