SACRAMENTO – In front of a hometown crowd and facing a tough young opponent, Urijah Faber proved that he’s one former champion who still has plenty of fight left in him. Faber tagged Michael McDonald with a looping right hand that left him dazed and staggering, leading to a guillotine choke finish at 3:22 of the second round.

The bantamweight bout was the co-main event of today’s UFC on FOX 9 event at Sleep Train Arena in Sacramento. It aired on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and MMAjunkie.

Though the bout may have gotten off to a slow start, the action picked up in a hurry thanks to Faber’s big right hand midway through the second frame. The first punch stunned McDonald, and the follow-up put him down. When he left his neck open while trying to avoid taking any more follow-up blows, it proved to be all the invitation Faber needed, as he locked on the choke and cinched it home to force the tap.

“There is a real sense of community here in Sacramento,” Faber said. “We have a lot to cheer about, and I’m glad I get to play a role in that. Michael McDonald is a tremendous opponent, and I really look forward to watching his career. He’s got so much potential, but tonight was my night. People say I’m old, but I’m 34 – look at what people are doing in their 40s and 50s, and it’s amazing. The guys on my team prepared me so well for this fight that I never doubted I would get the victory. Now I’m looking forward to a little vacation and seeing what the future holds.”

Faber (30-6 MMA, 6-2 UFC) has now won four in a row in the UFC, with his last loss coming in a bantamweight interim title bout against Renan Barao in July of 2012. McDonald (16-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) has now lost two of his last three inside the Octagon.
