The idea that Ben Rothwell might be able to catch Josh Barnett with a big punch and take home the win at UFC on FOX 18 wasn’t far-fetched. The idea that Rothwell would win by submission, though? That seemed like a stretch.
But that’s exactly what Rothwell managed to do as he made a very loud case for a shot at the heavyweight title.
The heavyweight bout co-headlined today’s UFC on FOX 18 main card at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. It aired on FOX following prelims on FOX Sports 1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The fight was a slow-paced affair for over a round and a half, but once Barnett (34-8 MMA, 6-3 UFC) pushed Rothwell (36-9 MMA, 6-3 UFC) to the cage in what looked to be an attempt for a takedown. Rothwell seized on the opportunity and locked up Barnett’s neck and squeezed for the submission finish at the 3:48 mark of Round 2.
