UFC on FOX 15 results: Ovince Saint Preux knocks out Patrick Cummins with uppercut

NEWARK, N.J. – Ovince Saint Preux couldn’t always stop Patrick Cummins from taking him down in their classic striker-versus-grappler match-up. He did, however, make him pay for every attempt – especially the last one.

With Cummins (7-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC) charging forward late in the first, a retreating Saint Preux (18-6 MMA, 6-1 UFC) launched a left uppercut that caught Cummins cleanly on the chin, sitting him down in the center of the cage and opening the door for a brutal torrent of punches by Saint Preux that would lead to a TKO stoppage at 4:54 of Round 1.

The light heavyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC on FOX 15 event at Prudential Center in Newark, N.J. It aired on FOX following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of the main card on FOX.

It came as no surprise that Cummins looked to take this fight to the floor almost immediately. In that endeavor, he was initially successful. The fight was just seconds old when Cummins hauled Saint Preux to the mat for the first time. It was an instant later, however, that Saint Preux returned to his feet, using his size and strength to power himself off his back.

This trend would continue throughout the first, with Cummins pressing for and usually getting the takedown, but finding himself unable to control Saint Preux on the ground. Saint Preux, meanwhile, began punishing Cummins with knees to the body and punches to the head on his way in, making each takedown attempt a costly affair.

In the final minute of the round, Saint Preux faded away from a Cummins charge, throwing up the left uppercut almost more as a shield than a strike. The blow cracked Cummins on the chin, halting him in his tracks. A moment later, Cummins’ legs gave out and he found himself sinking to the floor, a dazed look on his face.

Saint Preux wasted no time following up with a series of blistering punches and hammerfists, smashing the wounded Cummins until referee Dan Miragliotta was forced to call a stop to the bout.

For Saint Preux, the win makes it two straight since his lone UFC loss to Ryan Bader last August. Cummins’ defeat snaps a three-fight winning streak in the UFC.
