There are no hard feelings for UFC middleweight Chris Weidman after FOX cameras recently passed over him without so much as a note.
Weidman said his attendance at Game 3 of the World Series was a last-minute invite from actor Kevin James (who got a pop during the broadcast) and he didn’t expect the royal treatment.
“I’m used to it,” he told MMAjunkie Radio. “I was just having a great time. No one knew I was going there. Everyone knew Kevin James was going to be there; Billy Joel was going to be there; (N.Y.) Gov. (Mario) Cuomo was in our box, (actor) Paul Rudd.
“In fairness to the FOX people, because I know they got killed (by fans online), they didn’t know I was even there.”
Weidman (13-0 MMA, 9-0 UFC), a New York native, said he’s been to Mets games before and done the media rounds. But on that night, he was just there to have some fun in the midst of his training camp for UFC 194 on Dec. 12, where he attempts his fourth title defense against Luke Rockhold (14-2 MMA, 4-1 UFC) in the event’s co-headliner at Las Vegas’ MGM Grand Garden Arena.
Although he needed no consolation, Weidman’s home team delivered that night, beating the Kansas City Royals to put up their first win in the series, 2-1. The Mets’ luck eventually ran out in a big way, with the Royals taking the series 4-1.
Now, Weidman has all the more motivation to bring home the gold for the Empire State. You can bet he’ll get an on-screen graphic then.
“(The Mets) didn’t even know I was there,” he said.
