UFC Lightweight Reza Madadi Sentenced to 18 Months for Grand Larceny in Sweden

UFC lightweight Reza Madadi on Friday was sentenced to one year and six months in jail by a Stockholm court on a charge of grand larceny.

Sherdog.com contributor Ryan O’Leary of MMAViking.com obtained and translated court documents that revealed Madadi was found guilty for his alleged part in a May incident at a designer handbag store in Sweden, during which Madadi and two associates reportedly made off with roughly $150,000 in stolen property.

The 33-year-old was also hit with two fines at his sentencing and was ordered to pay roughly $104,200 to store owners Image Group AB and $102,525 to insurance company Alands Omsesidiga Forsakringsbolag. According to the documents, Madadi still denies the charges levied against him, and he will have until Sept. 6 to appeal the verdict. One year ago, Madadi made headlines in quite a different way, when the fighter saved a toddler and his father from drowning in Sweden.

“Mad Dog” joined the UFC in April 2012, debuting with a second-round submission of Floridian prospect Yoislandy Izquierdo. The Iranian-born Swede followed that performance with a split decision loss to Cristiano Marcello this past October but returned to the win column on April 6, when he tapped “Ultimate Fighter 12” finalist Michael Johnson with a third-round brabo choke at UFC on Fuel TV 9.
