UFC Fight Night 85 medical suspensions: Lombard and Mir could be out 6 months

Seven fighters, including main-event heavyweight Frank Mir and co-main event welterweight Hector Lombard, could be sidelined as long as a half-year after UFC Fight Night 85.

The UFC released a list of medical suspensions stemming from its most recent event to MixedMartialArts.com. With no sanctioning body in Australia, the UFC acted as its own regulator for the event, which took place Saturday at Brisbane Entertainment Centre in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia. The card aired on FOX Sports 1 following early prelims on UFC Fight Pass.

In the main event, Mir (18-11 MMA, 16-11 UFC) was knocked out in the first round by Mark Hunt (12-10-1 MMA, 7-4-1 UFC). In addition to a medical suspension of 45 days with 30 days of no contact, Mir, a former heavyweight champion, could be out for 180 days unless a doctor clears his head and neck with a CT scan.

In the co-feature, Neil Magny (18-4 MMA, 11-3 UFC) mounted a comeback to stop Hector Lombard (34-5-1 MMA, 3-3 UFC) with a third-round TKO. Magny took plenty of damage in the first round before his rally in the second and third and is suspended for 30 days with no contact for 21 days. Lombard, like Mir, is out for 45/30, and could be on the shelf for 180 days unless a CT scan clears his head, allowing him to return sooner.

Other fighters who need a doctor’s sign-off to come back sooner than 180 days are: Chad Laprise (10-2 MMA, 3-2 UFC), who dropped a decision to Ross Pearson (19-10 MMA, 11-7 UFC), needs a negative x-ray on his right hand; Richard Walsh (9-4 MMA, 2-3 UFC), who lost a decision to Viscardi Andrade (19-6 MMA, 3-1 UFC), needs a negative x-ray on his right forearm; Alan Jouban (13-4 MMA, 4-2 UFC), who knocked out Brendan O'Reilly (6-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC) in the first round, needs his left elbow cleared with an MRI; James Te Huna (16-9 MMA, 5-5 UFC), who was viciously knocked out by Steve Bosse (11-2 MMA, 1-1 UFC) in the first round, needs his head cleared with a CT scan; and Antonio Carlos Junior (5-2 MMA, 2-2 UFC), who was stopped in the third round by a Daniel Kelly (11-1 MMA, 4-1 UFC) rally, needs to be cleared by an ENT specialist.

All fighters on the card were suspended for a minimum of seven days for a mandatory rest period. The list of suspensions longer than the mandatory minimums stemming from UFC Fight Night 85 includes:

  • Frank Mir: Suspended 45 days with no contact for 30 days; in addition, suspended 180 days unless cleared by a head and neck CT scan.
  • Neil Magny: Suspended 30 days with no contact for 21 days.
