UFC Fight Night 80 results: Sage Northcutt hype rolls on with submission of Cody Pfister

LAS VEGAS – After some early trouble from Cody Pfister, Sage Northcutt rallied to keep his hype train rolling with a second-round submission.

Northcutt’s (6-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC) pressure drew a takedown attempt from Pfister (12-4-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC), who exposed his neck after controlling his young opponent with wrestling in the opening frame.

The lightweight bout was part of the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 80 event at The Chelsea at The Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.

The fight came to an end at the 0:41 mark of Round 2, extending Northcutt’s unbeaten streak to seven fights including two in the UFC’s octagon. Pfister, an early flameout on “The Ultimate Fighter 15,” drops to 1-2 in the promotion.

More importantly for Northcutt, perhaps, is the validation of all the attention he has received since being discovered earlier this year by UFC President Dana White. The 19-year-old continues to face critics who think he’s been babied by the promotion.

A questionable standup in the fight’s first round, which came after Pfister held top position and kept active with ground and pound, is likely to be scrutinized.

Northcutt immediately capitalized on the shift, taking down Pfister and threatening an arm triangle choke before ending the frame with punches from the top. In the second round, however, there was no doubt as to who was in the driver’s seat. After Pfister’s mistake, Northcutt quickly applied the guillotine choke, adjusted position, and got the tapout.
