ADELAIDE, Australia – Jake Matthews’ eagerness to get the fight to the ground proved to be his undoing against James Vick.
“TUF 15” alum Vick (8-0 MMA, 4-0 UFC) extended his unbeaten streak and handed Aussie Matthews (8-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) his first loss when he seized a choke on his shooting opponent.
The lightweight bout opened up the main card of today’s UFC Fight Night 65 event at Adelaide Entertainment Centre in Adelaide, South Australia, Australia. It streamed on UFC Fight Pass.
The end came at the 4:53 mark of the first round after Matthews fiercely tapped to a guillotine choke. Vick is now the owner of a four-fight win streak, while Matthews drops to 2-1 in the UFC’s octagon.
Matthews had success early with a hook and didn’t struggle to put Vick on the mat, nodding to the crowd before executing a slam. The time on the mat was short lived, though. Vick got back to his feet and kept Matthews off him with punches on the inside. After an eyepoke brought a timeout and doctor check, Matthews pushed in for a takedown and wound up exposing his neck.
