ATLANTIC CITY – Onetime Invicta FC title challenger Leslie Smith (7-5-1 MMA, 1-1 UFC) picked up her first UFC win by crowding the long and lanky Jessamyn Duke (3-2 MMA, 1-2 UFC).

Smith got inside and landed a flurry of hard punches and kicks, including a crippling shot to the body, that sent Duke to the mat in the opening frame.

The women’s bantamweight bout was part of today’s UFC Fight Night 45 preliminary card at Revel Casino Hotel in Atlantic City. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following a single prelim on UFC Fight Pass.

Smith, whom ex-Strikeforce champ Sarah Kaufman outpointed in her octagon debut, was declared the winner at the 2:24 mark of the first round when Duke fell to the mat and nearly took a knee to the face on her way down.

Early on, Smith quickly closed distance on the 5-11 Duke and landed hard right hands. Duke tried to evade and worked her long jab, but she couldn’t keep the appropriate distance.

Duke has now lost two straight since a win over Peggy Morgan in her first UFC appearance following a stint on “The Ultimate Fighter 18.” Smith is 2-3 in her past five outings and picks up her four career knockout win.
