UFC Fight Night 37 Weights: Dong Hyun Kim, John Hathaway Cleared for China Headliner

Dong Hyun Kim scoffs at the idea of his being labeled a gatekeeper. He sees himself as a contender in the Ultimate Fighting Championship welterweight division.

Kim tipped the scales at 171 pounds for his five-round clash with the once-beaten John Hathaway (171) in the UFC Fight Night 37 main event on Saturday at the Cotai Arena in Macau China. “The Ultimate Fighter: China” welterweight finalists Wang Sai (170) and Lipeng Zhang (170) also met their mandated weight requirements without issue at Friday’s official weigh-in.

A fourth-degree black belt in judo, Kim will carry a three-fight winning streak into the cage. The 32-year-old “Stun Gun” last fought at UFC Fight Night 29 in October, when he knocked out former Jungle Fight champion Erick Silva at Jose Correa Gymnasium in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and improved his UFC record to 9-2. Kim has never lost a decision as a professional, going 10-0-1 in bouts that reach the judges.

Hathaway has rattled off three straight wins since he wound up on the wrong side of a unanimous decision against Mike Pyle at UFC 120. However, the 26-year-old London Shootfighters export has not competed since UFC on Fuel TV 5 in September 2012, when he captured a unanimous verdict from John Maguire at the Capital FM Arena in Nottingham, England. Hathaway has compiled a 7-1 mark since arriving in the UFC five years ago, including wins over “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 1 winner Diego Sanchez and Brave Legion’s Rick Story.

UFC Fight Night 37 “Kim vs. Hathaway” -- which streams on UFC Fight Pass at 5:45 a.m. ET/2:45 a.m. PT -- will also feature a heavyweight scrap pitting American Top Team’s Shawn Jordan (261) against “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 10 alum Matt Mitrione (260) and a featherweight tilt matching onetime Sengoku champion Hatsu Hioki (146) with Tristar Gym representative Ivan Menjivar (146). Five preliminary bouts will round out the UFC’s return trip to China: Yui Chul Nam (154) vs. Kazuki Tokudome (155), Nam Phan (136) vs. Vaughan Lee (136), Albert Cheng (170) vs. Anying Wang (171) and Jumabieke Tuerxun (145) vs. Mark Eddiva (145).
