UFC Fight Night 34 play-by-play and live results


SINGAPORE – MMAjunkie is on scene and reporting live from today’s UFC Fight Night 34 event.

The card, which features bout between former Strikeforce welterweight champion Tarec Saffiedine and Hyun Gyu Lim, plus the debuts of Tatsuya Kawajiri and Sean Soriano, takes place at Marina Bay Sands Expo and Convention Centre in Singapore. Both the main card and prelims stream on UFC Fight Pass, the promotion’s new digital network.

RUSSELL DOANE (13-3 MMA, 1-0 UFC) VS. LEANDRO ISSA (11-4 MMA, 0-1 UFC)

Round 1 – Touch of gloves starts the night. Issa with an early low kick that Doane meets with punches. They exchange again, and Issa drops level and scores an easy takedown. Doane rolls on a transition and gets back to his feet, and they reset. Right hand scores fro Doane. Issa misses on a big return shot and stumbles. Doane firing a big overhand right that’s finding a home. Issa shoots from distance. Doane defends, but Issa won’t let up, and he finally gets it to the floor. Half-gaurd underneath for Doane. Wrist control, but Doane hits a smooth sweep and then transitions to the back. Issa turns, but Doane stays tight. He postures and lands a few punches before standing and kicking the legs. He pushes down, but when he does, Issa immediately locks in a triangle choke. The hold looks deep, but Doane fights it. He lifts Issa in the air and drives him against the fence. Doane in trouble, but he’s not giving up. One minute left. Doane pressing down with his right arm to keep space. Doane somehow survived the hold, and we go to the second. MMAjunkie gives the first to Issa, 10-9.

Round 2 – Doane paws a jab from the center. He lands a crisp right hand and tries for a flying knee. Issa wants to shoot in again, but Doane stands him up and drives in a knee. Issa pushes in tight, but Doane spins him off the cage. They break and start again. Issa with a low kick. Doane again looking to et up the right hand. He lands it. Issa exchanging, but he’s not getting the best of it. He does mix in a few kicks, as well, but that Doane right hand is troublesome. Issa shoots again, but Doane defends and makes him pay with strikes. Issa driving in again, but he nearly gives up the neck. He pulls away, but Doane blasts him with he right hand. Issa desperate for the takedown. Doane crushing him with strikes. Issa gets pounded with elbows. He locks the body, but Doane pushes him to his back and moves immediately into side control. Doane has a crucifix and is in complete control. Issa hooks the legs, but Doane simply steps over to mount. Issa rolls, but now he’s in a triangle choke. Final seconds of the round, and Doane tries to get the finish. He does, just before the bell, as Issa is out.

DUSTIN KIMURA (11-1 MMA, 2-1 UFC) VS. JON DELOS REYES (7-3 MMA, 0-1 UFC)

Round 1 – Delos Reyes with an early low kick. Kimura there to answer with punches. Delos Reyes presses forward, throwing his hands. He clips Kimura, and second right hand staggers him. Kimura trying to close the distance. Delos Reyes follows him to the floor and looks to strike. Kimura seems to be recovering, and he works his legs up. Delos Reyes pushes them aside, but Kimura creatively rolls for the arm. Delos Reyes pulls free and sets up again on top. Delos Reyes in control, but that changes when Kimura seizes the arm and turns. Delos Reyes is in trouble. He tries to fight through it but is forced to tap. Great finish from Kimura, who was definitely in trouble in the early going.

TAE HYUN BANG (16-8 MMA, 0-1 UFC) VS. MAIRBEK TAISUMOV (21-4 MMA, 1-0 UFC)

Round 1 – Bang with his right hand low. Taisumov opens with a front kick. Taisumov stays away and slaps the leg from the outside. A second kick comes in. Bang yet to really engage. Bang holding the center, but he’s yet to push in with offense. Taisumov kicks the leg again. He goes to the body. Bang punches, but Taisumov slips and counters. Bang kicks the leg but eats one to the body. Taisumov looks content to slip and counter. Bang does walk him to the cage, but Taisumov slips away. He scores with a left hand. Taisumov catches a kick and pushes Bang to the floor. As Bang crawls back up, he nearly eats an illegal kick. Taisumov apologizes, and we carry on. Knee inside for Bang. Taisumov again chops the legs. Taisumov ducking and chucking with big hooks. Bang is walking him down. Ban with a leaping knee that’s blocked. Round ends on the feet. MMAjunkie gives it to Taisumov, 10-9.

Round 2 – Bang looks a little more lively to start the second. Taisumov moving well. He misses with a kick. Bang stalking from the center. His hands are low. Taisumov kicks again to the body. Crowd wants action. Taisumov shoots in. Bang blocks it but falls to his back. He uses upkicks to make space and crawls back to his feet. Bang is very complacent on the restart and doesn’t seem to have any real offense planned. Taisumov is the quicker fighter, but he seems to be waiting for a counter, so the action isn’t flowing. Taisumov just misses a leaping right hand. Taisumov kicks to the body. Bang pops a jab. Taisumov there to answer. Less than a minute in the frame. Crowd starts to boo. They want action. Taisumov lands a short elbow inside. Round ends on the feet. It wasn’t as impressive, but MMAjunkie gives it to Taisumov, 10-9.

Round 3 – The fighters meet in the center. Bang looks to throw, and Taisumov ducks under and immediately brings the fight to the floor. Bang elbows underneath as Taisumov tries to punch from the top. Bang scoops to the fence, but Taisumov pulls him away. bang crawls up to his feet, but Taisumov stays tight and lands inside with knees. Taisumov keeps the body wrapped and tosses Bang to the floor. Taisumov nearly takes the back in a scramble but has to settle for top position. Taisumov in the dominant spot. Bang with a decent defense underneath, and he actually scrambles up to his feet. Taisumov kicks the legs. Taisumov misses a spinning kick and eats a counter punch that he seems to think was to the back of the head. Bang misses a flying knee. Less than a minute. Bang reaches with a punch, and Taisumov moves inside, scoring a beautiful throw and finishing the fight in top position. MMAjunkie gives the third to Taisumov, 10-9, and awards him the fight 30-27.

DAVID GALERA (5-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) VS. ROYSTON WEE (3-0 MMA, 1-0 UFC)

Round 1 – Galera with a quick kick after the touch of gloves. Wee grabs hold and slams him to the floor, and the crowd goes nuts for the Singapore native. Galera scrambles to guard. He kicks his legs high and looks like he’s nearly on to something, but Wee pulls free and settles back in on top. Galera with the closed guard underneath. Wee postures and punches, and the crowd starts to chant his name. Galera hooks the neck and pushes over in a smooth sweep, but Wee winds up back on top in the following scramble. Not a lot of offense from the top, but Wee is dominating the positioning. He does land an elbow and a few short punches to the body. Galera trying to shift his hips but not finding a lot of options. He leans to the left and does scores wot the temple with some nasty elbows. Wee answers with one of his own, and Galera is bleeding from the right eye. Galera returns to the elbows. Wee answers again, and the round ends. MMAjunkie gives it to Wee, 10-9.

Round 2 – Galera with an early kick, and Wee again uses the moment to push his opponent to his back. Galera again looking to move while on his back, but Wee stays in control from the top. Positional control for Wee paying dividends. Galera looking to turn, but Wee traps his right arm. Galera scrambles to get it free. He’s back in full guard. Wee again not doing a ton of damage, but he’s also no allowing Galera to get off his back. Galera tries to scramble up, but Wee picks the leg and presses him back down. Wee just smothering from the top. Crowd doesn’t seem to mind since it’s their fighters. Less than a minute, and Galera does get to his feet. Wee stays tight. Galera tries to grab the neck, and Wee just pulls him down yet again. Round ends there, and MMAjunkie gives it again to Wee, 10-9.

Round 3 – Galera wants to strike, but he can’t end up on his back again. He lands a knee and then rushes forward with punches as Wee looks to be fixing his shorts. Wee again presses forward and scores the takedown. Galera looks annoyed as he postures up. Wee happy to keep control from the top. Galera just absolutely can’t get to his feet. Wee postures, and Galera scores with a stiff illegal upkick. Referee John Sharp immediately steps in to call time. The attending doctor comes in and rules he’s OK to continue. Galera is docked one point, and the fight is restarted with Galera on his back. Two minutes left. Galera scrambles up to his feet. Wee stays tight and picks him up to slam him to the floor. Big takedown. Galera rolls and attacks the right arm. He nearly has a submission from his back, but Wee pulls free, much to the delight of a briefly stunned crowd. Fight ends there, and MMAjunkie awards the final round to Wee, 10-8, with the deduction and gives him the fight fight 30-26.

KATSUNORI KIKUNO (22-5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC) VS. QUINN MULHERN (18-4 MMA, 0-2 UFC)

Round 1 – Mulhern quickly forward. Kikuno with his hands out, hovering around his waist. Mulhern looks to use a long jab. He lands a right hand. Kikuno kicks the leg and walks patiently forward. Mulhern uses his reach, but Kikuno gets inside. They clinch, and Kikuno winds up in top position. Mulhern gets his legs up and nearly sets up an omo plata. He looks for the gogoplata, as well. Kikuno eventually pulls free and gets back to his feet. Kikuno gets inside with a left hand and a nice uppercut. He kicks the body. Mulhern shoots from distance but misses. Mulhern has a high kick blocked but then scores with two punches. Kikuno scores on a counter. Mulhern shoots but has to settle again for working from his back. Kikuno gets back to his feet. Kikuno with his hands down, and he just misses eating a huge kick. Mulhern shoots again but willingly goes to his back. Round ends with Kikuno on top, and MMAjunkie begrudgingly awards him the round, 10-9. Not a ton to score, but Mulhern too willingly gave up the position.

Round 2 – Mulhern kicks the body. Kikuno gets inside and scores with a stiff left. Mulhern off-balance to the floor. Kikuno follows but crawls back to his feet. It doesn’t stay there long. Kikuno continues to get top position and then back away. Mulhern eats a right hand on the way in, and it seems to hurt him. Mulhern again to his back. He holds tight underneath. Kikuno happy to control from the top, but he’s careful to stay compact. Mulhern gets his leg high, but Kikuno easily pulls free and eventually goes back to his feet. Mulhern hesitant on the feet, and Kikuno is stalking. He lands two crisp left hands. Mulhern ducks into a knee before again settling on to his back. Mulhern looks to use rubber guard, but the frame ends. MMAjunkie gives it to Kikuno, 10-9.

Round 3 – Kikuno again in the odd stance, walking forward. Mulhern lands a jab, but Kikuno counters with his own flurry before pushing forward and taking the top position yet again. Kikuno is in complete control. Mulhern briefly scrambles and looks to get to his feet, but he willingly goes to his back yet again. Kikuno in charge, and he lands a few punches from the top. Referee Steve Perceval calls for action, and he stands the pair with a little more than 90 seconds left. Kikuno defends another takedown, and Mulhern goes to his back. Kikuno backs away, and we fight on. Mulhern misses a spinning kick. Kikuno presses inside and looks for a lateral drop. He doesn’t score it, but Mulhern fine to go there. Fight ends, and MMAjunkie scores the final round for Kikuno, 10-9, giving him the bout 30-27.

Round 1 – Chope quickly forward and looking to press the action. Holloway scampers away and misses on a spinning kick. Chope pushing and lands a right hand. He kicks the leg but eats a counter. Chope looking to attack. Holloway handling himself well against the pressure. Right hand for Chope. He just misses a knee. Pace is settling a bit as they get into a rhythm. Chope linking together combinations. Holloway answering, but the Chope right hand is landing well. Holloway scores with a nice left and a spinning kick to the body. A right hand touches the chin. Chope is hurt. Holloway now on the attack. Chope recovering, but he eats a crisp left hand. Chope moves inside to tie things up. Holloway gets away, and he’s very comfortable. late flurry seals the frame for Holloway, 10-9.

Round 2 – Holloway with an early kick to the knee. Chope just misses on a long uppercut.Holloway with a big counter right. He turns up the heat. Chope is hurt. He presses forward, but Holloway is all over him. Chope showing heart, but he’s getting lit up on the feet. Referee Leon Roberts watching close. Chope is firing back, looking for something, and he refuses to go down. But Holloway is just wailing away on the feet. Chope clinches up and slows things down. Holloway waits through it and then pulls free, firing off four punches that score flush. Chope is really hurt, and he finally goes to the canvas. Roberts is right there to call it off. Great finish for Holloway.

KYUNG HO KANG (12-7 MMA, 1-1 UFC) VS. SHUNICHI SHIMIZU (28-9-10 MMA, 0-1 UFC)

Round 1 – Kang stands tall as the smaller Shimizu moves on the outside. Kang misses a big spinning kick. Kang stalking, and he kicks the leg. Shimizu looks for a takedown but eats a knee. Kang turns and tries to get away. Shimizu won’t let go. Kang presses inside and blasts away with punches. He moves to mount and looks like he might finish it there but instead sets up a triangle and rolls toff to finish it. It’s not there, but he turns his attention to the arm. Shimizu is in trouble but somehow turns and relieves the pressure. He’s still trapped, and Kang elbows the head. Shimizu holding his arm to keep it safe. Kang turns back to the strikes and lands an illegal elbow. Referee Steve Perceval steps in and has doctors look at the damage that was caused. Shimizu fights on, and Perceval takes away two points. On the restart, Kang misses another spinning kick. Shimizu tries to slide in for a takedown. He can’t get it, but he does wind up clinching and getting the action to the floor. Kang n top, and he backs away. Kang kicks and lands to the groin. Shimizu falls to his knees. Perceval only issues a warning this time. Round ends just after the restart, and Shimizu takes it on the MMAjunkie card, 9-8, with the deduction.

Round 2 – Kang attacks the legs early. Shimizu looks for the takedown but absorbs damage wile seeking it. He falls to the floor, and Kang follows and looks to strike. Kang settles into mount, and Shimizu tries to buck free underneath. Kang lands a few short, thudding elbows. Kang looks to posture and strikes, and he sneaks in a few more crushing shots. Shimizu is taking the blows and looking for options, and he does nail a sweep to the top. As Kang works to get back to his feet, Shimizu willingly falls to guard. Kang happy to posture and strike, and he’s in complete control. Shimizu gets the feet on the hips. Kang postures and misses with a few big strikes. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Kang, 10-9.

Round 3 – Shimizu moving laterally to open. He shoots on on a takedown. Instead, Kang gets free and scores one of his own, driving Shimizu to the floor. Big strikes from the top for Kang, who is the far stronger fighter. Shimizu with guard underneath. He’s actively looking for opportunities to gain some momentum, but Kang is just cruising from the top. Kang postures and strikes. He moves back down and delivers short elbows to the face. Shimizu tries to get free, but Kang spins beautifully to keep top position, getting side control and then mount. He moves immediately from there into a side choke, dismounts and squeezes. Immediate tap. Great finish.

LUIZ DUTRA (11-3-1 MMA, 0-1 UFC) VS. KIICHI KUNIMOTO (16-5-2 MMA, 1-0 UFC)

Round 1 – Kunimoto moving his hands as he looks sot strike from distance. He pushes inside and looks for a takedown, and Dutra defends agains the fence. Kunimoto tries to change levels, but Dutra stays upright, and they break away. Kunimoto leaps in with a jab on the restart. Dutra staying very compact. Kunimoto kicks the legs. Dutra misses a spinning kick. Kunimoto works the leg again and just avoids a big counter. Kunimoto has the timing right now, and he scores with strikes before moving in for a takedown. Dutra defends and drops five elbows to the back of the head. Kunimoto falls, and referee John Sharp steps in. Doctors step in to look at Kunimoto, but he isn’t looking like he’ll recover. Sure enough, this fight is over. The blows certainly looked intentional, and it is ruled a disqualification.

Round 1 – Kawajiri takes the center and pumps a jab. Sorianos defends a takedown. He kicks the legs. Sorian with a stiff jab. Kawajiri misses on another takedown. Soriano looks quick to start. Kawajiri pushes forward anyway and does get inside. Still, he can’t get Soriano down. Back in the center. Kawajiri just misses a spinning elbow. Soriano striking when he can. Kawajiri gets inside again. He gets the fight down, but Soriano pops back up and fires elbows against the fence. Kawajiri stays right and gets another takedown. Soriano showing a lot of skill, but Kawajiri is unrelenting. He gets to the back of a kneeling opponent. Kawajiri starts to look for the choke. He squeezes an attempt, but Soriano turns in and stays safe. Kawajiri has a figure-four around the body, and Soriano is stuck. Kawajiri wants the choke. Soriano not willing to give up. Kawajiri flattens him out and punches. He looks again for the choke. Not there, so he strikes away. Soriano survives, but Kawajiri takes the first, 10-9 on the MMAjunkie card.

Round 2 – Kawajiri immediately gets on tight. Soriano briefly slips outside, but Kawajiri reverses the position and brings the fight to the floor. Kawajiri in a good spot, and he gets the arm under the neck. This time, he gets it. Soriano goes out just as he taps. Nice finish.

Saffiedine switches stances. Lim kicks the body again. Right hand score, and he avoids the return shot. Saffiedine kicks the lead thigh. Lim misses a knee up the middle. Saffiedine hits the floor as Lim picks his leg. Lim follows, but Saffiedine scrambles to his feet. Two minutes left. Saffiedine kicks the lead leg again. Those are scoring well. Lim with a nice jab, and he kicks the body again. Lim managing the distance well, avoiding a lot of Saffiedine’s attacks. His right hand scoring often, as well. Saffiedine kicks the body. Lim scoring, but he’s reaching at times, and Saffiedine countering well in those spots. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Lim, 10-9.

Round 2 – Saffiedine starts quickly, pumping his jab. Lim trying to keep some space and use his length. They exchange, and Saffiedine lands a right hand. Lim staggers. Saffiedine continues to press forward. He scores again. Lim recovers quickly, but he was in some trouble. Lim pumps a jab, but Saffiedine is finding a home for his right hand. Jab for Saffiedine, followed by a kick to the leg. Saffiedine picking up the volume. Lim misses a flying knee. Saffiedine with a right hand. Jab scores. He’s finding his mark. Saffiedine fighting well in tight. Saffiedine digs the body and lands a big left up top. Right hand follows. Saffiedine is in a rhythm. He’s chopping the leg, as well. Lim giving chase, and he’s dangerous, but the momentum has switched. Short right for Saffiedine. Lim misses a few power shots. Saffiedine is picking him apart right now. Round ends, and MMajunkie gives it to Saffiedine, 10-9.

Round 3 – Saffiedine out quickly again. Lim ready to answer, but he’s getting outworked. Lim slips, but he gets back to his feet. Saffiedine pushes, and Lim hits the floor. Lim looks for a leg, but Saffiedine turns through it and moves to the back. Lim pops out the back door and gets back to his feet. Saffiedine moving laterally again. Lim takes a hard leg kick and buckles. A second kick sends him to the floor. Saffiedine kicks the limb a bit more and then presses down on top. Saffiedine postures with a big left hand. Lim trying to hold him tight from half-guard. Saffiedine works in a few more punches from the top. eferee Leon Roberts stands them up. Lim is slow to rise. That leg is in trouble. Saffiedine kicks it again, and Lim falls. Saffiedine briefly celebrates, but Roberts makes them fight. Round ends, and MMAjunkie gives it to Saffiedine, 10-9.

Round 4 – Lim comes out swinging, but he can’t stand. Lim doing everything he can to turn this around, but Saffiedine knows the finish is near. Saffiedine weather the storm and looks to finish this fight with leg kicks. Lim is all heart, but his leg is shot. Saffiedine hits him with a leaping knee, and Lim hits the deck. Saffiedine follows to the canvas. Saffiedine tries to move to the back. Lim turns in to prevent the pass. Saffiedine in side control. Lim probably happy he’s not standing on that leg. Lim doing everything he can to survive. Saffiedine patient on top. He lands a few shots to the body before the bell. MMAjunkie gives it to him, 10-9.

Round 5 – Lim still wobbly, and Saffiedine attacks the leg. Two hard kicks see Lim buckle. Right hand scores for Saffiedine. Lim tries to flurry. Saffiedine covers well, but Lim has no quit. Knee for Lim. He’s punching away, but as soon asSaffiedine kicks the leg, it all stops. Saffiedine actually glances at the clock.Not sure if he’s tired or feels bad, but he seems to have Lim ready to go, yet he’s not getting it done. Lim chasing as Saffiedine constantly retreats and resets. He finally lands another big kick, and Lim falls. Saffiedine backs up, and we reset. Saffiedine with a right hand.
