Chris Weidman waited a long time to be able to fight in his home state of New York. The memory he’ll take away is not a good one after Yoel Romero blasted him into unconsciousness with a knee.
The middleweight bout was part of the main card of the UFC 205 event at Madison Square Garden in New York. It aired on pay-per-view following prelims on FS1 and UFC Fight Pass.
The back-and-forth battle came to a stunning end when Romero (13-1 MMA, 8-0 UFC) drilled Weidman (13-2 MMA, 9-2 UFC) in the side of the head with a flying knee. Weidman dropped to the canvas and Romero threw heavy hands to the badly bleeding head of his foe until the fight was called off at the 0:24 mark of Round 3.
Romero is now in line for a shot at Michael Bisping’s middleweight title.
