UFC 184 results, photos: Derrick Lewis blasts Ruan Potts for second-round TKO

LOS ANGELES – Ruan Potts didn’t have much to offer Derrick Lewis, who was able to take his time in the second round for a convincing TKO.

Lewis (12-3 MMA, 3-1 UFC) had to survive a solid submission attempt from Potts (8-4 MMA, 0-3 UFC) in the first round, but tore through him with ease in the second.

The heavyweight bout was part of the preliminary card of today’s UFC 184 event at Staples Center in Los Angeles. It aired on FOX Sports 1 following additional prelims on UFC Fight Pass and ahead of a main card on pay-per-view.

Potts opened with an outside leg kick, but Lewis calmly stalked from the center and threw a body kick. Both fighters looked for kicks early, but 75 seconds in, Potts worked his way inside and the two clinched up. But Lewis caught Potts with a low knee.

Potts kicked up high and nearly caught Lewis, but then slipped backing up and Lewis was all over him. But Potts went after his leg and got it. He may have had Lewis in trouble, but the bigger man worked through it and got a reprieve until Potts got the fight to the ground seconds later and went to work from half-guard. But Potts lost position and Lewis drilled him from up tool. Seconds later, another massive punch thundered throughout the arena. But Potts survived the ground-and-pound to see the second round.

Potts looked like he didn’t want to get off the stool to open the second round. But he did, and Lewis made him pay for it fairly quickly. With the fight on the ground, Lewis landed some heavy hands. But then he dropped into Potts’ guard, where after a few breaths, he passed to half-guard. And eventually, Lewis landed enough punches from on top in mount go get the stoppage against an exhausted Potts.

Lewis got back in the win column after a September loss to Matt Mitrione, which saw a five-fight winning streak and eight-fight unbeaten streak snapped. Potts lost for the third straight time, all in the UFC.
