Robbie Lawler finished Jake Ellenberger in the third round of their main card fight at UFC 173 in Las Vegas on Saturday.
Lawler outstruck Ellenberger for a majority of the bout, landing the finishing blow by technical knockout at 3:06 of the third round.
“I’m coming for that title,” Lawler said following the win.
Lawler pressured Ellenberger early on, throwing a combination of punches and kicks. Ellenberger fought conservatively for a better part of the opening round, landing only a few significant strikes for the first five minutes of the fight.
Things in the second round were scrappy in the beginning, as the two fighters clinched against the cage and engaged in flurries. Lawler, however, continued to land a number of shots throughout the round. Ellenberger succeeded in securing two takedowns, both of which allowed him to land strikes on the ground.
The third round had Ellenberger turning up the pace in the early moments, pressing Lawler against the cage and landing punches. Lawler recovered and eventually landed a jab that began the ending sequence. A knee and left hand later and it was all over.
With the win on Saturday, Lawler improved his record to 23-10, 1 NC.
