Tyrone Spong Has Surgery on Gruesome Leg Break, Could be Back in Six Months

Tyrone Spong broken legWorld Series of Fighting light heavyweight Tyrone Spong suffered a severe leg break during a kickboxing bout at Glory 15 on Saturday, leading most to compare it to former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva’s recent injury.

Spong’s injury occurred when he landed a leg kick during a bout with Gohkan Saki in Istanbul. When the kick landed, the lower portion of Spong’s right leg snapped. He immediately fell to the canvas. Saki quickly realized what happened and dropped next to Spong to console him. (Watch video footage of Spong’s injury.)

Instead of remaining in Istanbul, Spong returned to Florida – where he trains with the Blackzilians – to have surgery.

“I want my family, friends and fans to know that I’m okay,” Spong said on Monday. “The trip home to Florida was a long one and I am thankful to be back in Florida.  I had surgery this morning and it went perfectly.”

The surgery apparently went well, as Spong is already talking about his return.

“My doctors said it turned out to be a clean break and they feel confident that I will recover 100 percent,” he said. “They said I can be training for a fight as early as six months if I rehab properly.  I feel very optimistic. Thank you all for your support.”

Spong had been planning to return to the WSOF cage this summer for his third mixed martial arts bout, but that will have to be put on hold. Spong currently has a 2-0 record in MMA with both bouts taking place under the WSOF banner.
