Roy Nelson’s long trip from the U.S. to Abu Dhabi proved worthwhile as he earned a much-needed victory over Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira in the UFC Fight Night 39 main event.
Nelson (20-9 MMA, 7-5 UFC) entered the event on a two-fight losing streak and looked poor in both showings. While some pundits speculated that the 37-year-old may be over the hill, his first-round knockout of Nogueira (34-9-1 MMA, 5-5 UFC) in the UFC Fight Pass headliner showed he still has plenty left in the tank.

Love Big Nog, a legend but I never want to see him fight again. Nelson looked sharp. Set up combos with feints & was patient. #UFCAbuDhabi

I say that re: Big Nog out of respect for the man. I don’t want to see him get hurt again. Man has given us enough great fights #UFCAbuDhabi — Kenny Florian (@kennyflorian) April 11, 2014

Its hard to see a legend go down like that. Big Nog had some big wins in Brazil, won Pride and UFC titles, I think its best he hangs them up — Michael Chiesa (@MikeMav22) April 11, 2014
