One day after the Ultimate Fighting Championship announced that former UFC middleweight champion Rich Franklin would battle Cung Le at UFC 148; they added a new fight to the card. Already headlining that event is scheduled to be the UFC bantamweight title defense by Dominick Cruz against Urijah Faber. On March 19, the latest news puts a middleweight showdown on the card, pitting Michael Bisping and Tim Boetsch.
Boetsch is coming off one of the greatest comebacks the UFC has seen in their history. At UFC 144, Yushin Okami was dominating the 31-year-old American for the first 10-minutes of their fight. When the third round began, Boetsch knew he needed a finish to get the win and he went for it. He landed several vicious upper-cuts to Okami, dropping him 54 seconds into the third round.
The last time we saw Bisping, he was losing a controversial decision to Chael Sonnen at UFC on Fox 2. Heading into the Sonnen fight, Bisping had won four in a row, and to many, was on his way to a title shot with a victory. Even with the loss, Bisping is respected more in the sport, mostly because of his ability to prevent the takedown from Sonnen.
When these two men step into the Octagon together, it could be considered a title eliminator fight. While the winner of this fight won't see an immediate title shot, the loser will drop in the rankings. Boetsch is 6-3 in the UFC and is currently in his second UFC stint. Since dropping to the middleweight division from light heavyweight, he is 3-0, defeating Kendall Grove, Nick Ring and Okami.
For Bisping, he has been a regular in the middleweight division for the UFC since defeating Charles McCarthy at UFC 83. He is 12-4 in the UFC, with three of the losses coming to top-five fighters. He will be the toughest fight that Boetsch has had in the sport, but it's a fight that should keep fans entertained. If Bisping learns one thing from watching film of Boetsch vs. Okami, it's not to let Boetsch hang around. If Bisping can do this, he could walk away with a victory.
