Shogun Rua Robbed at Gunpoint During Recent Trip to Rio de Janeiro

Shogun RuaFormer UFC light heavyweight champion Mauricio “Shogun” Rua had an eventful trip to Rio de Janeiro recently when his car was stopped and he was robbed at gunpoint.

Shogun was in Rio earlier this month to do some promotional work for a sponsor. He and his manager, Eduardo Alonso, went out to dinner with fellow UFC fighter Demian Maia, who was also in town representing one of his sponsors.

After dropping Alonso and Maia off at their hotel in Barra da Tijuca, Shogun was driving a friend’s car back to his own hotel when he was stopped by another car. Four armed men robbed him and stole his friend’s car.

Shogun was not harmed.

“We were in Rio de Janeiro with Demian representing a sponsor, and we went out to dinner with the Shogun. He was there also taking photos for another sponsor,” Alonso told Brazilian news site PVT. “By the end of the night, he left us in our hotel in Barra da Tijuca, and went to Niterói, where he was staying.

“On his way, driving a friend’s car, he was stopped by another car and four armed individuals and stole his friend’s car, stole Shogun’s shirt, stole his money, and said, ‘I know who you are, you’re a fighter. Don’t try anything.’ It was an unfortunate situation.”

Shogun broke his nose in his most recent fight with Dan Henderson. He recently had surgery to repair his nose, but it is unclear when he will return to the Octagon.
