Ronda Rousey hospitalized after brutal knockout loss to Holly Holm at UFC 193

MELBOURNE, Australia – Deposed UFC women’s bantamweight champ Ronda Rousey was transported to an area hospital following a brutal knockout by Holly Holm.

Holm (10-0 MMA, 3-0 UFC) knocked out Rousey (12-1 MMA, 6-1 UFC) in the second round in the headliner of Saturday’s UFC 193, which took place at Etihad Stadium in Melbourne, Australia. UFC President Dana White confirmed Rousey’s hospitalization at the post-event news conference.

“She was transported because she got knocked out,” White told MMAjunkie. “Then her lip was split in half, so they had to sew her lip.”

The UFC president said Rousey was “completely bummed out” after the two talked post-fight at the 70,000-seat Etihad Stadium, where the promotion broke a live attendance record with 56,214 and did live gate of $9.53 million Australian dollars ($6.8 million US).

Holm picked up dual $50,000 bonuses for “Fight of the Night” and “Performance of the Night” in addition to pulling off perhaps the biggest upset in UFC history.

Holm caught Rousey flush with a head kick, dropping her to the canvas before follow-up punches forced referee intervention at the 0:59 mark of the second round. It was Rousey’s first professional defeat after six title defenses and a meteoric rise that made her the UFC’s biggest star.
