Former Bellator MMA fighter Shahbulat Shamhalaev was hospitalized on Wednesday in Makhachkala, Russia after being shot “several times” while dining at a local restaurant.
According to a report from Russian website ndelo.ru, Shamhalaev was in intensive care after undergoing surgery that resulted in the removal of a kidney. The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Dagestan press service confirmed that the incident occurred, but no details concerning the perpetrators or other victims was released.
The 32-year-old featherweight fought five times under the Bellator banner, last competing at Bellator 120 in May of 2014. Ndelo.ru posted surveillance video of the incident. While the video doesn’t show the victims, several armed assailants can be seen entering the established and firing shots.
