Rafael dos Anjos Thinks Conor McGregor’s UFC Lightweight Dream Isn’t Smart

Rafael dos Anjos realized a dream by winning the UFC lightweight championship earlier this year in March. Much of the excitement over his victory was dulled, however, due to an injury that would sideline him for months after the win.

So now, his first title defense under his belt and his health fully intact, dos Anjos is ready to stay busy.

After defeating Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone in 1:06 at UFC on FOX 17 on Saturday in Orlando, Fla., dos Anjos indicated he is ready to get back in the Octagon as quickly as he can.

That’s not surprising, and not just because of the quickfire victory. dos Anjos suffered a knee injury in the lead-up to his fight with Anthony Pettis in March, but he worked through it and captured the title.

After the victory, he had to take some time off to heal the injury, so the fight with Cerrone was pushed to December, nine months after winning the belt.

“Since I won the title against Pettis, I had the MCL injury. It took me maybe four months to get better,” said dos Anjos at the post-fight press conference on Saturday night. “And here I am, defending my belt, and I didn’t have any injuries. I’m looking forward to coming back as soon as possible.”

Rafael dos Anjos vs Conor McGregorWhile there are already challenges to be had in the lightweight division, newly minted UFC featherweight champion Conor McGregor has indicated a desire to vie for the lightweight belt as well. That might not be the best choice for McGregor to make, according to dos Anjos, but he’s not shying away from the challenge.

“Conor McGregor said that he wanna come to my division. I think it’s not gonna be a smart decision for him, but if he wanna come, I will be happy to welcome him,” said dos Anjos.

“We are not even on the same division. He is featherweight; I am lightweight. But if he come, I will be here.”

The ball, it seems, is now in the UFC and Conor McGregor’s court. What say ye gentlemen?
