Mark Munoz, Chris Weidman Collide July 11 in UFC on Fuel TV 4 Headliner

Rising middleweights Mark Munoz and Chris Weidman will lock horns in a five-round main event at UFC on Fuel TV 4, promotion officials announced Tuesday night.

The 185-pound clash marks the first announced contest for the July 11 event, which will take place at a to-be-announced location.

Undefeated through eight professional contests, Weidman last competed Jan. 28, stepping in as an injury replacement at UFC on Fox 2 after Munoz withdrew from his co-headlining attraction with Chael Sonnen due to injury. Sonnen was then paired with Michael Bisping, who was initially slated to face Brazilian jiu-jitsu ace Demian Maia that night. Bisping’s promotion left the submission specialist without a foe until Weidman answered the call on just 11 days’ notice.

A former NCAA Division I wrestling standout at Hofstra University, Weidman, 27, debuted with the UFC just over one year ago, outpointing Alessio Sakara at UFC Live 3. Three more Octagon victories would follow for the two-time All-American, as Weidman finished Jesse Bongfeldt and Tom Lawlor before taking a unanimous decision from Maia in January.

Meanwhile, Munoz has not seen action since stopping Chris Leben this past November at UFC 138, a victory that extended his current winning streak to four fights. Another collegiate wrestling ace, Munoz won a national title at 197 pounds for Oklahoma State University in 2001. A two-time World Extreme Cagefighting veteran, Munoz has racked up a UFC record of 7-2 and has been beaten just once since cutting to 185 pounds, dropping a split decision to Yushin Okami in August 2010.
