UFC light heavyweight competitor Eliot Marshall has been released by the world's largest promotion.

Marshall, who was defeated in each of his last two Octagon appearances, made the announcement via Twitter on Wednesday night.

Known for his submission skills, Marshall is a six-time UFC veteran. “The Fire” was victorious in each of his first three UFC outings, notching victories over Jules Bruchez, Vinny Magalhaes and Jason Brilz. However, “The Ultimate Fighter” Season 8 alumnus was released after his next bout, a split decision loss to Vladimir Matyushenko.

After posting three straight wins outside the UFC, Marshall once again signed with the Las Vegas-based promotion earlier this year, stepping up on short notice to replace an injured Karlos Vemola against Luiz Cane at UFC 128in March.

Though Marshall suffered a first-round knockout at the hands of the Brazilian, he would fare much better in his next outing against Brandon Vera at UFC 137 on Oct. 29. Marshall and Vera fought competitively until the third round, when Marshall used his grappling ability to lock up a tight armbar that damaged Vera's elbow. In the end, however, the three cage-side judges felt that Vera had done enough in the first two frames to walk away with a unanimous decision
