Hughes: Sanchez Bout Targeted for Sept. 24 in Denver

New details have emerged regarding the planned welterweight matchup between Matt Hughes and Diego Sanchez.

Following a Thursday announcement by the UFC stating that the bout will take place this fall, Hughes (Pictured) took to his blog to reveal more specifics on Saturday.

“As some of you may have already heard, my next fight will be against Diego Sanchez on Sept. 24 in Denver,” wrote Hughes. “That’s all I know as of right now. I’ll post more information as soon as I can.”

A UFC Hall of Famer, Hughes had a three-fight win streak snapped in November by B.J. Penn at UFC 123. After rattling off wins against Matt Serra, Renzo Gracie and Ricardo Almeida, the 37-year-old Hughes was knocked out by Penn in just 21 seconds. Known for his trademark ground-and-pound offense, Hughes is a former two-time UFC welterweight champion and owns 20 of his 45 career victories by submission.

After making a serious run the UFC’s lightweight division, Sanchez returned to welterweight in 2010. Though he received a rude welcome back to 170 pounds by Brit John Hathaway at UFC 114, Sanchez has since returned to Jackson’s MMA and has rattled of back-to-back wins, outpointing both Paulo Thiago and, most recently, Martin Kampmann in a controversial March decision.
