Golden Glory Earns Judgment; NSAC to Garnish Overeem’s Purse

Alistair Overeem’s UFC 141 fight purse will reportedly be garnished due to a court order, according to an announcement released Friday by the legal team representing the fighter’s former managers.

Represented by attorney Roderick J. Lindblom, Golden Glory and Knock Out Investments filed suit on Thursday in Clark County, Nev., for breach of contract. On Friday Lindblom's law offices issued a release regarding the suit:

“There has been some consternation about the timing of a lawsuit filed by Knock Out Investment[s]/Golden Glory against Alistair Overeem," the release stated. "We've been in discussions with Mr. Overeem's legal counsel since Nov. 7, and there has been no progress regarding the dispute. The reality is that a fighter is paid within 24 hours of the bout. Given past failure to pay management and training fees, there is serious concern on my client’s part that Mr. Overeem will simply walk away with the money.

“As of this morning, a Nevada District Court issued an Order directing the issuance of a pre-judgment writ of attachment and garnishment on Overeem’s fight purse, which would indicate that KOI/GG’s claims are meritorious.

“It would have been ideal if a lawsuit could have been avoided; KOI and Golden Glory wish Alistair well in the fight, and, in fact, have a financial interest in his continued success. Unfortunately, my clients simply had no choice.”

Overeem left Golden Glory and filed suit in Los Angeles Superior Court against his former managers in November, alleging that he was owed back pay and was tied to an unfair contract.

The former Strikeforce heavyweight champion, Overeem has not lost a fight since 2007. The 31-year-old had a banner year in 2010, capturing the Dream interim heavyweight title as well as the K-1 world grand prix kickboxing title, as well as defending his Strikeforce belt successfully against Brett Rogers. The Dutchman was victorious in his lone outing this year, outpointing Fabricio Werdum on June 18 in the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix quarterfinals.
