Georgi Karakhanyan Plans to Break a Leg at World Series of Fighting 5 on Saturday

Georgi KarakhanyanAfter losing two of three bouts to close out his Bellator career in 2010, featherweight Georgi “Insane” Karakhanyan has won seven fights in a row.

According to Karakhanyan, getting back on track was merely a matter of going back to what worked for him prior to the brief rough patch.

“I’m taking every fight the way I used to take them before,” he said. “I’m taking them very seriously. I’m also working on the holes in my game and I’m getting better every day.”

Perhaps most impressive during his streak is the fact that Karakhanyan won his last fight over UFC vet Din Thomas at Legacy FC 19 in April after nearly withdrawing from the match.

“Going into the fight with Din, I was really sick,” he said. “I was planning on not fighting, but I did my best and I came out with the victory.”

After bouncing around various promotions the last three years, Karakhanyan (21-3-1) will have an opportunity to prove himself again in a top company as he makes his World Series of Fighting debut on Saturday night against former UFC fighter Waylon Lowe (14-4).

“He’s a stocky guy, a good wrestler, and an overall good fighter who is tough, on a five-fight winning streak and he’s the kind of opponent that I want,” said Karakhanyan of Lowe.

“I plan on breaking my leg from kicking him so much. And if the fight goes to the ground, my jiu-jitsu is pretty solid to where I could attack or if I get in a submission (attempt by Lowe) I can escape and get back up.”

If anything, Karakhanyan told MMWeekly.com that he wants this fight to showcase the type of fighter he wants to be.

“If (Lowe) wants to turn it into a wrestling match or a boxing match, whatever he wants to do, I’m willing to take it there,” said Karakhanyan.

“That’s the kind of fighter I want to be; not great at one thing, but be good at everything.”

Now that he’s found a promotion he can call home, the most important thing for Karakhanyan is to remain busy and perform up to everyone’s expectations.

“I’m trying to get on the next (WSOF) in October or November,” he said. “I’d like to get in at least one or two more fights before the end of the year. I want to stay busy and as active as I can.

“Of course, I’d like to have a nice belt and be their first featherweight champion if the opportunity comes, but at the end of the day, it’s about performing well; performing how the crowd and the promotion likes it; and getting a victory.”
