It appears the UFC is moving closer to booking a proposed bout between featherweight contenders Frankie Edgar and Cub Swanson.
Edgar (17-4-1 MMA, 11-4-1 UFC) recently called for the bout while talking to MMAjunkie, and Swanson (21-5 MMA, 6-1 UFC) now appears open to it.
Edgar, in fact, recently hit up UFC executives Dana White and Lorenzo Fertitta on Twitter and pushed for them to headline UFC on FOX 13, which takes place Dec. 13 in Phoenix:
I'm glad Cub wants to fight me. Let's give the fans what they deserve on Dec 13 on Fox, 5 rounds. @danawhite @lorenzofertitta @ufc—

On Wednesday’s edition of “UFC Tonight,” reporter Ariel Helwani said the fight is currently a possibility for UFC Fight Night 53, which takes place Oct. 4 in Stockholm. That overseas event still needs a headliner, and Edgar vs. Swanson would certainly fit the bill.
Regardless of when the potential bout could take place, it’d have immediate ramifications in the 145-pound title picture; Swanson is currently ranked No. 3 and Edgar is No. 4 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA featherweight rankings. (Champion Jose Aldo is No. 1 and his expected upcoming opponent, Chad Mendes, is No. 2.)
While Swanson, who’s won six straight (with four fight-night bonuses), was hoping to fight for a title in his next bout, Edgar believes the fight still makes sense.
“I think I’m probably his toughest fight, his toughest out, his toughest way to the title,” Edgar told MMAjunkie. “But if you want to be the champ, you’ve got to go beat everybody. If he doesn’t fight me now, he’s going to have to fight be sooner or later. Might as well get it done now. We’ve got time.”
