Former UFC Champion Jens Pulver Enjoying a Life of Giving Back

While he’s looking to keep a low profile and spend more time with his family in 2016, former UFC lightweight champion Jens “Lil Evil” Pulver is in the midst of a busy couple weeks.

On April 15, Pulver went to London, where he and Josh Palmer commentated at Cage Warriors 75 on UFC Fight Pass.

“It was a great card and it was a lot of fun,” Pulver told MMAWeekly.com. “I had a good time commentating. I kind of do it like I’m sitting down and watching fights and explaining it for people who never may have seen a fight before. I keep it easy and just kind of explain what’s going on.

“You never know with the new fighters coming up when somebody’s going to tear the roof off. I like that, just rolling with it and watching people perform.”

For Pulver, being able to use his vast fighting experience to commentate is not only for the benefit of the fans watching, but also the fighters themselves.

Jens Pulver at WEC 34“One of my favorite things to do when I was coming up was to get home so I could listen to the commentating,” said Pulver. “I wanted to hear what they said about the fight and how they were critiquing it, so yeah, maybe I’ll throw some advice out there here or there because I know it could be something for them.”

Having returned home to Iowa from England, Pulver has a couple weeks off before heading to Pine Ridge Indian Reservation in South Dakota on May 2 for a series of motivational speaking engagements.

“I’m excited to go out there and hang out and talk to kids on the reservation and let them know my story,” Pulver said. “Let them know where I came from and how I used athletics to get me to where I am now.

“I was saved by coaches and now it’s time for me to become one of those coaches. Not just in the fighting world, but to be a coach in life and go out there and guide people and help give them an opportunity to find their own path in life. It’s my turn and this is a great opportunity.”

One of the main points Pulver is looking to get across to the youth of the Oglala Sioux Tribe is his Never Fly Solo philosophy.

“Never Fly Solo is about being your own best friend first,” said Pulver. “We tell ourselves so many negatives and we say so many bad things to ourselves, that all it takes is one person or one stranger to say one thing and it becomes the straw that broke the camel’s back. I really want to tell them to use mentors to help guide and build you, but learn to become your own best friend.”

Following his speaking engagements, Pulver is looking to make an impact with one his favorite past times, video games.

“The gaming world and I are going to meet head-on here real soon,” Pulver said. “We’re working on the platform we’re going to use and a way we’re going to do this. We’re looking into bringing in some big names and gaming with everybody who wants to game for different causes.”
