Heavyweight champion, Cain Velasquez was forced out of his headlining title fight fight against Fabricio Werdum — which was set to go down on Nov. 15, 2014 — with a knee injury, prompting UFC officials to call on Mark Hunt as a late replacement.
A few days later, an injury forced co-headliner, Joe Lauzon, out of his much-anticipated lightweight scrap against Diego Sanchez.
Now, just 24 hours removed from that unfortunate setback, the pay-per-view (PPV) event has taken yet another major blow, as the aforementioned Sanchez has also been forced out of the event with, you guessed it, a knee injury suffered in training, according to MMA Fighting.
You can’t make this stuff up, folks.
For those of you keeping count, that’s now four fighters who have been bounced off the card, as Norman Parke, who was originally set to take on Sanchez, was the first to be victimized by the injury bug.
And what was once looking to be one of the most entertaining events of 2014 (see the original fight card here) is now looking like a watered down UFC Fight Pass card.
No word yet on if UFC intends to add a last-minute bout to beef up the main card on a few weeks notice or go ahead and promote a prelim bout up to the PPV portion of the event.
