Demetrious Johnson Derailed by Hernia Surgery

Demetrious Johnson UFC 126

After a scoring snafu in their first fight delayed the first UFC flyweight title fight, Demetrious “Mighty Mouse” Johnson finally, officially got the victory over Ian McCall at UFC on FX 3 last week.

Only now, another issue has sidetracked Johnson’s showdown with Joseph Benavidez to crown the first ever UFC flyweight champion.

“Honestly, I would love to fight tomorrow, but I got a couple injuries coming into this fight from my last fight, had a couple stitches, had a hematoma on my shin,” Johnson said on a recent edition of HDNet’s InsideMMA. “And I also went to the doctor and I have to go in for small procedure surgery on Friday; I suffered a hernia during the fight.”

The hernia isn’t a major problem for Johnson, but it does cause discomfort for him just standing around, so you could imagine that it’s not ideal for him to try and fight with such an injury.

Outside of that, Johnson is good to go. In fact, he’s more than ready to step in the Octagon with Benavidez and crown the promotion’s first 125-pound champion.

“I just want to get it taken care of and move forward in my career and get that strap around my waist.”

The hernia operation should sideline Johnson for just a couple of weeks. Then it’ll be back to work, prepping for the fight with Benavidez sometime in the coming months.
