Claudia Gadelha and Joanna Jedrzejczyk Rematch on Hold Due to Injury

Following her UFC 190 one-sided unanimous decision win over former World Series of Fighting women’s strawweight champion Jessica Aguilar, UFC president Dana White said Claudia Gadelha had earned a rematch against 115-pound titleholder Joanna Jedrzejczyk.

During the UFC 190 post-fight press conference, Gadelha had her left hand wrapped and in a sling. She was medically suspended following the fight for six months, or until she had her hand cleared by a doctor. It turned out that the 26-year-old Brazilian partially tore a ligament in a finger and will need several months to recover, putting the rematch off until 2016.

Claudia Gadelha“I partially tore a ligament in my middle finger. The doctor gave me three months to be 100 percent and do anything with that hand. I will spend 20 days with my finger immobilized,” Gadelha recently told Combate. “I’m already feeling better, I can move it, but I will need three months to punch with this hand again, so I believe the fight could happen in January.”

Jedrzejczyk last fought in June, defeating former Invicta FC atomweight champion Jessica Penne by technical knockout in her first title defense. During the course of the fight, Jedrzejczyk suffered a broken finger and underwent surgery to repair it in July.

Jedrzejczyk and Gadelha fought to a split decision at UFC on Fox 13 in December 2014 with Jedrzejczyk getting the nod from the judges. It’s the only blemish on Gadelha’s 12-1 record.
