Champ Demetrious Johnson talked to Dana White about 'magic number' for superfight

From a future Costco job to his planned retirement age to fighting at bantamweight to “love thrusts,” UFC flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson covered a lot of topics during a recent Q&A session.

Prior to this past weekend’s UFC Fight Night 66 event in The Philippines, 28-year-old “Mighty Mouse” cohosted a fan Q&A session.

In the above video, Johnson (22-2-1 MMA, 10-1-1 UFC), who’s ranked No. 1 in the USA TODAY Sports/MMAjunkie MMA flyweight rankings (and No. 3 pound-for-pound), discusses his plans to retire in 10 years, whether he’d move up a weight class to get revenge at bantamweight, his most recent win and more.

The dominant champ, who’s registered six consecutive title defenses, was also asked about a potential superfight, likely at catchweight or a potential move up to 135 pounds, where champ T.J. Dillashaw reigns. It’s a topic he said he recently broached with UFC President Dana White.

“Whoever it’s against, down the road – like I said, I already gave Dana White the magic number,” he said. “We sat down, and we talked about it before. So if it presents itself and the numbers are right, yes, I’ll do (a superfight).”

In the meantime, he’s got his eye on the flyweight division, which boasts two big fights on Saturday at UFC 187 in Las Vegas: No. 3 Joseph Benavidez (21-4 MMA, 8-2 UFC) vs. No. 6 John Moraga (16-3 MMA, 5-2 UFC) on the pay-per-view main card, and No. 2 John Dodson (16-6 MMA, 5-1 UFC) vs. No. 10 Zach Makovsky (19-5 MMA, 3-1 UFC) on the FOX Sports 1-televised prelims.

“At the end of the day, I don’t know what the world wants to see,” Johnson said. “In my eyes, I’m trying to fight all of them.

“My goal is to make sure that when you go to the flyweight division and you look at every single person who’s in the flyweight division, you see, ‘Demetrious Johnson – loss.’ ‘Demetrious Johnson – loss, armbar.’ That’s my goal, so I don’t worry about all that stuff. I just worry about who I’m going to be fighting next and make sure I stay healthy.”
