Bellator 61 Heavyweight Main Event Scratched

Bellator 61 PosterThe Season 5 Heavyweight Tournament Final at Bellator 59 last November was supposed to have crowned a No. 1 contender to Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad.

That didn’t happen.

Eric Prindle and Thiago Santos’s fight was instead ruled a no contest. Prindle was unable to continue after Santos accidentally kicked him in the groin in the opening minutes of the fight.

The two were then supposed to square off at Bellator 61 on Friday night in Louisiana. That bout, however, has been put on hold, and appears headed to Bellator 62 next week in Texas, according to a report by USA Today. Maiquel “Big Rig” Falcao and Norman Paraisy will serve as the new Bellator 61 main event.

Bellator CEO Bjorn Rebney told USA Today the fight was pulled from Bellator 61 because Prindle was ill. Evidently, he was vomiting and showing flu-like symptoms, leading Louisiana’s regulators to recommend against the fight.

Prindle and Santos will give it a go again at Bellator 62 next week in Laredo, Texas, hopefully providing Konrad with an opponent.

Konrad has fought only once since winning the belt in October 2010. That one fight was a non-title bout victory over UFC veteran Paul Buentello. He is obviously getting anxious to finally put the belt on the line.

Hearing the news about Prindle and Santos being delayed, Konrad tweeted, “Let me fight both.”

That won’t happen, but maybe he’ll finally get to fight one of them if there are no more bumps in the road next week.
