Anderson Silva Blames Positive Drug Tests on Sexual Performance Supplements

Former UFC middleweight champion Anderson Silva will go before the Nevada Athletic Commission on Thursday to answer for his failed drug tests before and after his UFC 183 bout against Nick Diaz in January.

Anderson SilvaIn a pre-fight drug test, Silva tested positive for the anabolic steroids Drostanolone and Androstane. Silva also tested positive for Drostanolone and the anti-anxiety medication Oxazepam and Temazepam, which is used to treat sleep deprivation, in a post-fight urinalysis. Silva’s representatives are expected to argue that the 40-year-old wasn’t trying to enhance his performance inside the octagon; he was trying to enhance his performance inside the bedroom.

In documents obtained by Combate, Silva admitted to taking the anti-anxiety medication the night before the Jan. 31 event, but denied knowingly using the anabolic steroids.

In Silva’s defense, the fighter claims that the positive test results for Drostanolone stemmed from the use of a supplement to “improve sexual performance” that contained Drostanolone metabolites and that the presence of Androstane in his system was a result of another supplement that “could have been contaminated.”

Silva faces fines up to $250,000 and the attorney general of Nevada, Christopher Eccles, has asked that the result of the bout be changed to a No Contest.
